The 11th Annual NERI Labour Market Conference in association with Queen’s Management School at Queen’s University Belfast provided a forum for the presentation of research papers on labour market issues (North & South of Ireland & international).
The event took place in Queen’s Management School at Queen’s University Belfast, 185 Stranmillis Road, Belfast BT9 5EE on Tuesday 23 May 2023 from 10:20 - 17:00.
The conference included research papers on various aspects of the labour market and labour market policy. Programme is here
Professor John Turner, Queen's Management School welcomed everyone to the Labour Market Conference and on behalf of the NERI, Co-director Paul Mac Flynn introduced Professor John FitzGerald, Trinity College Dublin as the speaker at the morning plenary session.


Professor John FitzGerald, Trinity College presented in the first plenary session on ‘One Island, Two Labour Markets: a look at the history of the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland labour markets over the last 100 years'. The response titled ‘Different Labour Markets, the Same Policy Goals’ was made by NERI Co-director Dr Tom McDonnell – video of morning plenary session.


A presentation was made by Professor John Geary, UCD on a joint paper with Dr Lisa Wilson, NERI.

There were two presentations in the morning session by NERI economist's Ciarán Nugent and Chris Smart. Ciarán presented on 'Overqualified Third Level Graduates in the Labour Market' and Chris presented on 'Mapping the Labour Market in Ireland'.


In the afternoon plenary session, Mr John Mullane, CSO and Mr Gerard Colgan, NISRA presented on ‘Labour Market Statistics in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Similarities and Differences in Concepts, Measurements and Data – video here.
Other subjects that were discussed included workers rights, the climate crisis and workers wellbeing & living standards. All the presentations are available here.
The Conference was organised by Dr Lisa Wilson and Louisa O'Brien, NERI. We wish to thank Professor John Turner and Dr David Jordan, Queen's Management School for their co-operation in the organising of the Conference over the past 6 months.
