The Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI) is hosting a discussion on Northern Ireland’s fiscal position and the issues raised by the Draft Multi-Year Budget, which is currently out for public consultation. Using a new NERI paper on fiscal sustainability as a starting point, the event will explore the structural pressures on public finances, the responsibilities of the Northern Ireland Executive and the UK Government, and the range of policy options under active consideration - including expenditure restraint, revenue-raising, and longer-term institutional reform.
The event will begin with an overview of the main arguments presented in the NERI publication, followed by interventions from invited panelists. The panel aims to provide a rigorous, evidence-informed discussion that reflects the diversity of perspectives shaping the public debate. By bringing together economists, policy experts, and former senior officials, the event will examine both the short- and long-term challenges facing Northern Ireland’s fiscal architecture and create space for open dialogue on the ideas underpinning different policy approaches.
