Mr Laurie Macfarlane, Co-director, Future Economy Scotland presented a seminar titled 'Transforming the economy to deliver a Just Transition. Subsequently, a discussion was open to the floor where the chairperson, Paul Goldrick-Kelly, NERI presented questions to Laurie.
Abstract:
In recent years the concept of ‘just transition’ has gained traction in many countries around the world. Having arisen in the context of the 1970s labour movement, the term has grown to prominence in global, national and local policy debates. While specific definitions vary, most emphasise the importance of reducing emissions in a way that delivers fairness, tackles inequality and injustice, and centres the voice of the workers and communities most impacted. In other words: climate justice and economic justice are not mutually exclusive goals, but must be delivered hand in hand.
This seminar will detail work to date from 'Future Economy' on how to deliver a just transition and provide an evidence base to deliver a just transition.
Biography of the presenter:
Laurie is one of the Co-Directors of Future Economy Scotland. He is also a visiting fellow at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), a research fellow at The Democracy Collaborative, a council member of the Progressive Economy Forum (PEF), and a member of North Ayrshire Council’s Community Wealth Building Expert Panel. He is also the co-author of the critically acclaimed book ‘Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing’.
Prior to co-founding Future Economy Scotland, Laurie was Senior Economist at the New Economics Foundation, Economics Editor at openDemocracy and a trustee at the Finance Innovation Lab. He has also led research projects in a freelance capacity for a wide range of think tanks, trade unions, and public sector organisations.
