This Long-Read series no. 12 by NERI Co-directors Dr. Tom McDonnell and Paul Mac Flynn focuses on hours worked with a particular emphasis on the goal of more and better jobs.
More and better jobs anchor people's economic security and well-being. Economic security is, in turn, a necessary if insufficient condition for a sustainable economic and social model.
Our challenge is two-fold, policymakers must create an environment that ensures workers and businesses are positioned to flourish in a consistently evolving global economy. They must also enact a policy suite that uplifts the average quality of employment on the Island while refraining from policies that privilege or encourage bad jobs.
