What values for what vision was the title of a ‘Léacht’ I gave over a year ago at the Fóram Díospóireachta in Dublin. The talk was transmitted by Raidio na Gaeltachta later last year and an audio is available here.  The talk, which was given in the Irish language, focuses on the challenges along the road of building a stronger society and economy – one that serves human needs and well-being and in which institutions including markets and states serve the goal of human flourishing and environmental sustainability.

Consideration of future models for reshaping Irish society must face up to the reality that past and current approaches have failed. The spectre of continuing emigration, under-employment and elevated levels of poverty point to a basic unfairness at the heart of social policy. Plotting a different future must entail a public discussion about public shared values.

(a translation of the talk into English is available on request to [email protected])
