Abstract:

In recent years there has been a flourishing of studies using a task-based approach to evaluate employment effects of technological change. Building on existing literature and addressing some of its critical omissions, we propose a novel approach to the classification of tasks which goes beyond the purely technical and deterministic view of the production process by taking proper account of the role of social and organisational aspects of production. We propose a comprehensive and detailed taxonomy of tasks which connects the substantive content of work with the organizational content of work. We also discuss the added value of our proposed taxonomy in evaluating the employment impact of new technologies, by accounting for relevant ongoing transformations such as the diffusion of artificial intelligence and the unfolding of digital platforms.
