Universal credit has been presented as a radical innovation that will simplify working age social security and promote transition from benefits to paid employment. The new benefit commanded cross-party support at both Westminster and Stormont when first proposed. It has since become increasingly controversial thanks to problems with implementation and reports of hardship experienced by claimants. This paper will give an early insight into findings from claimant’s-eye research on universal credit in Northern Ireland. The project aims to gather views on positive and negative aspects of universal credit, including the difference made by Northern Ireland-specific features of the benefit, and develop proposals for future improvements.
